SSC, CSB eye crucial wins to boost F4 bids

San Sebastian College-Recoletos and College of St. Benilde (CSB) seek to boost their respective bids for the last Final Four berth as they duel eliminated teams in Season 95 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament today at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The No. 4 Golden Stags (9-7) and the No. 6 Blazers (7-9) lock horns with No. 8 holders Arellano University (4-12) at 2 p.m. and Jose Rizal University (4-12) at 4 p.m., respectively.

San Sebastian, CSB and Mapua University (8-8) are the only teams left fighting for the last semifinal ticket after unbeaten leader San Beda University, Lyceum of the Philippines University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran secured their spots in the next round.

A win by the Stags over the Chiefs will eliminate the Blazers, who need to win their last two games and hope that San Sebastian and Mapua drop their remaining matches to keep their Final Four hopes alive.

Veteran coach Egay Macaraya’s Baste cagers are out to bounce back from a 73-90 loss to Mapua last Thursday.

MVP candidate Allyn Bulanadi, seasoned guard RK Ilagan and rookie forward Rommel Calahat will lead fight for the Stags.

On the other hand, the TY Tang-mentored CSB badly needs to rebound from a 73-95 beatdown to defending champion San Beda also last Thursday.

Athletic forward Justin Gutang will spearhead the Blazers’ charge while mainstays Edward Dixon, Unique Naboa and Kendrix Belgica are expected to step up.

In the game day opener at 12 p.m., Letran eyes to keep its winning form heading into the Final Four as it takes on cellar-dweller Emilio Aguinaldo College (4-13).

The Knights are coming off an 88-69 romp over University of Perpetual Help System DALTA last Friday.

“Our team is peaking just in time for the Final Four. Hopefully, we’ll continue winning,” said Letran coach Bonnie Tan.

Tan will bank on main main Jerrick Balanza, Bonbon Batiller, Larry Muyang and Ato Ular.
