No revenge factor in Ginebra-SMB finals clash – Cone

Two-time grand slam coach Tim Cone of Barangay Ginebra said that there is no revenge factor in the San Miguel Beer vs Barangay Ginebra Season 43 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup best-of-seven championship series that will start Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

“I’m not a big guy on revenge. You know when you get beat; you always want to get back and win. It is always bouncing back. But revenge is an emotional response and sometimes emotions can get on the way,” said Cone who is aiming for his 20th PBA crown.

Cone, who has already led the Gin Kings two straight Governors’ Cup titles since becoming the team’s head coach in 2015, doesn’t see strong emotions such as revenge as and ideal driving force.

“We don’t preach that. We preach just prepare and respect our opponent. And we’re a prepared team if we are a confident team, so we have to work with that.”

Cone will be relying on import Justin Brownlee and the now fully healed Greg Slaughter to subdue the formidable Beermen.

“We have Greg and Japeth (Aguilar) together, so we’ll see how it works out.”

Playing without the injured Slaughter, the Gin Kings lost to the Beermen in five games in the finals of the 2016-2017 Philippine Cup.

“I don’t play the revenge card, I know some coaches do. I just learned that when I was young listening to Phil Jackson that he never played the revenge card. He was always about staying in the moment, centering yourself, and not getting too emotional. So that’s something I just want to try to bring to our team. The players think about it (revenge), but I try to play it down and take it on different angle.”

Team owner Ramon Ang gave sister teams San Miguel Beer and Ginebra a marching order to win.

“We have our own marching orders and everybody here, we are sister teams. So we matched their marching orders. Their marching orders are no bigger than our marching orders,” said Cone.

Cone, too, has nothing but respect and admiration for SMB’s import Renaldo Balkman.

“He is a great player. He is a great player in college, he was a first round pick by the New York Knicks, so he has skills. He is not a great shooter just like Justin (Brownlee), but he has everything else and plays the game differently. He is just effective and efficient, plays the game on high level,” he said.
