Morales, Barrera predict Pacquiao win

Las Vegas, Nevada: Two of Manny Pacquiao’s former opponents, Erik Morales, and Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico are both putting their bets on the Filipino ring icon when the latter faces World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight champion Keith Thurman on Sunday (Philippine time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena here.

Morales predicted a unanimous decision or a late round stoppage win for the 40-year-old Pacquiao (61-7-2 win-loss-draw record with 39 knockouts).

“It is going to be a complicated fight no doubt about it. But Pacquiao will be starting to charge in the second round. It is going to be a decision or maybe a late knockout by Pacquiao,” Morales, 42, told the media through FOX network interpreter Felix De Jesus in a news conference on Thursday (US time) at MGM’s Media tent.

Morales (59-2 with 36 knockouts) beat Pacquiao in their first encounter in March 2005 via unanimous decision. But Pacquiao beat him twice in 2006 both by way of knockout. Morales retired in boxing nine years ago

“I was very technical. That’s what Keith Thurman needs to do,” added Morales pertaining to how he scored a victory against Pacman.

The undefeated Thurman holds a record of 29-0 record with 22 knockouts.

Barrera, 45, foresees Pacquiao winning by unanimous decision.

“I think so — by decision because Manny Pacquiao has the condition, he is also fast and he has the experience too,” said Barrera, who retired in 2011 with a record of 67-7 with 44 knockouts.

“It is very difficult to face Pacquiao. He’s a lefty and sometimes he jumps a meter away from you and then he’s right back in front of you. I’m a fighter that’s very technical so that made it even harder to hit Manny Pacquiao. Psychologically, it’s tough to fight Manny Pacquiao anytime.”

Pacquiao beat Barrera in 2003 by technical knockout and via unanimous decision in 2007.

World Boxing Council welterweight world champion Shawn Porter is also rooting for Pacquiao.

“We all know what Manny has done. He is a living legend and you cannot take that away from him. I think he is the favorite to win this fight for a reason,” said Porter.

Meanwhile, two-time light middleweight world champion Winky Wright cautions Pacquiao on Thurman’s ability.

“When I first met Keith Thurman it was clear the incredible power this young kid had as well as his will to win. Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter and he will come out throwing a lot of punches, but I think Keith Thurman’s jabs and movements are harder than Manny thinks,” said Wright.
