Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) appointed Shaq Delos Santos as head coach of the women’s national volleyball team after the unexpected resignation of Ramil De Jesus.
Delos Santos, who recently led the Petron Blaze Spikers to a championship in the Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix, is set to take over the national team’s preparations for the Asian Games and Asian Volleyball Championships this year along with the Southeast Asian Games to be held in Manila next year.
According to reports, Delos Santos’ appointment was already made a week ago. De Jesus, a multi-titled coach with De La Salle University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and F2 Logistics in the PSL, resigned two months after being named national coach.
”Coach Ramil has his own reasons and one of them is commitment. But I respect his decision,” said LVPI acting president Peter Cayco.
University of Santo Tomas (UST) mentor Emilio “Kungfu” Reyes and Foton assistant coach Bryan Esquibel will be part of the new coaching staff.
It is yet to be known whether Delos Santos will hold another tryout after De Jesus arranged two in April. The deadline of submission of the national team roster for the Asian Games is set on June 10.
Delos Santos served as assistant to Odjie Mamon, who led the Philippines to a bronze finish in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games.
Delos Santos’ Petron beat De Jesus’ F2 Logistics in the 2017 PSL All-Filipino Conference finals showdown. Delos Santos’ UST also bested De Jesus’ La Salle in the UAAP Season 72 titular series.
