Lady Altas, Blazers dispute last NCAA finals berth

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA and College of St. Benilde (CSB) dispute the last finals spot in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament today at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

The Lady Altas and the Lady Blazers head into the 4 p.m. all-out battle for the right to face the three-peat seeking Arellano University.

Back-to-back champion Arellano quickly disposed of San Beda University, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23, to seize the first finals berth.

Fourth seed Perpetual Help erased the twice-to-beat advantage of top seed St. Benilde with a 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23 victory last week, forcing a do-or-die Final Four match.

Head coach Macky Cariño, who jump-shipped from CSB to Perpetual, will lean on Cindy Imbo, Jenny Gaviola and Jhona Rosal.

Spitfire spiker Imbo spearheaded the Las Piñas-based squad in the semifinal opener with 19 points anchored on 16 hits and three service aces while Gaviola and Rosal provided enough support with 15 and 11 markers, respectively.

The Lady Altas are eyeing a return to the finals since snaring a third straight crown back in 2014.

But the Lady Blazers are also raring to get back to the championship round after three years.

CSB, then under Cariño, overcame the thrice-to-beat San Sebastian College-Recoletos to claim its first and only women’s volleyball crown in 2016.

Veteran outside hitter Rachel Anne Austero, Klarisa Abriam and Maritess Pablo are expected to lead the charge for the Jerry Yee-mentored volleybelles.

Austero had 18 points laced with six blocks for the squad from Taft even as Abriam had 15 markers and Pablo had 12 in the previous game.

In the men’s division, twice-to-beat St. Benilde will try to quickly finish off Emilio Aguinaldo College in their 2 p.m. semifinal tiff to arrange a finals date with defending champion Perpetual Help.

The Altas gained an outright spot to the titular series after sweeping the nine-game elimination round.
