Blazers eye share of lead vs Chiefs

College of St. Benilde (CSB) guns for a share of the lead anew as it plunges back to action against Arellano University in Season 95 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament today at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Off a two-week layoff after their three games got postponed, the Blazers (4-0) seek to sustain their unbeaten run for a joint leadership with San Beda University (5-0) at the expense of the Chiefs (1-5) in the 4 p.m. main game.

In the 2 p.m. curtain-raiser, Mapua University (1-5) shoots for its first back-to-back wins this season against the skidding Emilio Aguinaldo College (1-5).

CSB made it four wins in a row when they squeezed past San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 77-72, last July 30.

Enjoying their best start in school history, third-year head coach TY Tang wants his Blazers to remain focused as they try to avoid another meltdown that happened last year.

“I don’t wanna talk about us being a fluke or a contender right now. We’ve learned our lesson from last season and we just wanna go one game at a time,” said Tang.

“We just want to stay in the present and look how we’re going to move on,” he added.

Main man Justin Gutang is expected to play after recovering from a knee injury and join forces with Cameroonian center Clement Leutcheu, James Pasturan and Edward Dixon in leading the Blazers.

But season host Arellano is eager to snap a two-game losing skid capped by a 64-73 defeat to Mapua last Saturday.

Veteran guard Kent Salado and mainstays Archie Concepcion and Rence Alcoriza will power the Chiefs’ charge.

Meanwhile, Mapua is eyeing to follow up its breakthrough victory over Arellano that snapped its five-game losing start and break free from a deadlock at the bottom with the Chiefs and EAC.

Top gun Laurenz Victoria, who fired a season-high 29 points including clutch baskets, is tabbed to spearhead the Cardinals along with Paolo Hernandez and Arvin Gamboa.

On the other hand, the Generals are aiming to end a four-game skid behind JP Maguliano, Marwin Taywan and Jethro Mendoza.
