Defending champion San Miguel Beer will attempt to pull off a 3-0 sweep against Alaska at 7 p.m. tonight in Game 3 of their best-of-five semifinals series in Season 43 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen, who beat the Aces 92-79 in Game 1 and 105-94 in Game 2, are poised to deliver the killing blow and secure the first finals berth.
SMB wants its 40th overall finals appearance and a back-to-back in the Commissioner’s Cup.
“I’m expecting heavy resistance against Alaska and they will play all out. They are determined to win and we’re just lucky to win last Monday. We still need to work hard and this is a great opportunity to get into the finals again,” said San Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria.
Austria added that he is not after a sweep though it would be good to finish off Alaska tonight.
“We are not thinking of any sweep, but there’s nothing we can do if we win. If we have a chance to sweep them, it is going to be a big advantage on our part because we can rest for few days. Everybody is tired and we never had a day off. We keep on practicing and trying to see the field.”
Import Renaldo Balkman and four-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo were consistent in delivering huge performances for the Beermen. Balkman had 31 points and 10 rebounds while Fajardo finished with 21 points and 18 rebounds in Game 2.
Alaska, though undermanned, put up a good fight in Game 2 but defeat was evident when the Aces squandered a 41-25 lead before halftime and never recovered.
“We are going to fight again. We are fighting a great team, a championship team. We’re going to play hard and I just want to see that same level of passion,” said Alaska coach Alex Compton.
Alaska import Diamon Simpson delivered an all-around performance of 19 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and six blocks in Game 2.
